Juilliard Park Summer Concert Series in Santa Rosa, CA

The Lucky Losers (with Chris Burns, Robi Bean, Burton Wynne, and Marvin Greene) kick off a wonderful concert series in Santa Rosa. The concert series is for the summer only and repeats every week, every Sunday until Sun Aug 09 2015.

There’s no better way to spend your summer Sunday evenings than enjoying music, food and fun at Live at Juilliard! Now celebrating its 23rd season, this FREE concert series brings some of the Bay Area’s finest bands to Juilliard Park. Pack a picnic or purchase food from one of our tasty vendors. We are proud to be 100% solar powered. Thank you Sol-Solutions!

Juilliard Park is one of Santa Rosa's oldest parks.  The park site was once home to the Juilliard Family.  A 2-story Victorian house stood near the center of the park on Santa Rosa Avenue, and the rest was orchard.  The home was built in 1872 by Charles F. Juilliard, a winemaker.

Frederic Juilliard gave the property to the City in 1931 after he moved to New York.  Frederic was the brother of Mrs. Isabella (Mark) McDonald who lived on McDonald Avenue.  Frederic's uncle, August Juilliard, established and endowed the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.  Another of Frederic's brothers, Louis Juilliard, was a State Senator.

The park was designed by Oakland landscape architect Howard Gilkey, who grew up in Santa Rosa.  The park was developed in the depression years as a government project.  Its stone bridge, pond and walkway were constructed from rock hauled from the Kenwood quarries.

The Saloon in San Francisco, CA

The Lucky Losers, featuring Cathy Lemons and Phil Berkowitz, play at The Saloon in San Francisco, CA every second Thursday every month. Other band members include Marvin Greene, Steve Evans, Chris Burns, and Robi Bean.

The Saloon is the oldest bar in San Francisco (established 1861) and boasts the best of the blues in the Bay Area, not only in terms of the incredibly good music with exuberant crowds of a mid-week evening, but because of the impressive array of albums recorded on the premises and released by proprietor Myron Mu. The days of catching Tommy Castro at The Saloon are now at Christmas time under "TC Rider," but Ron Hacker, Steve Freund,  Daniel Castro, Cathy Lemons, Wendy Dewitt, and many others are on the regular roster. Cathy Lemons has been playing at The Saloon steadily since 1987.

During the 1800s, so the legends go, drunks who stumbled out of this tavern risked being shanghaied for nasty and ill-paid ocean voyages. The building survived the 1806 earthquake, it's said, because of its unusually stout timbers and because of the fact that it was once a brothel and the firefighters ran to save the ladies of the night from flames. Today the doorman/bouncer Greg scares the hell out of would-be troublemakers but is actually one of the sweetest characters you'll ever meet.

Corner Pocket Bar in Omaha, NE

You've got to love a bar when it's located in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Surrounded by blocks of single family homes, The Corner Bar is exactly that. Why can't every neighborhood have a bar like this? While the outside might suggest a perfectly rundown old bar, stepping inside suggests otherwise. There are plenty of new flat screen TVs blaring local news and Jeopardy during the day and sports at night. They also have a decent selection of crafty bottled beers for about $3 each, plus a good selection of spirits. The bartender also makes a mean Bloody Mary. Bud Light is $2.25 a pint.

The Corner Bar is a dive bar after all and these little quirks from the past are what you find to love about cozy little spots like this.

Shaw's Bar & Grill is the perfect North East neighborhood dive bar with a welcoming group of regulars. The Minneapolis Blues Society sponsores blues jams weekly. And like most bars in the area, you don't have to worry about a dress code. Drinks are kept at a low price, even if it isn't happy hour, which it almost always is.

Shaw's Bar also offers arcade games, golden tee, and darts, as well as a large, fenced-in patio. Music is always a mix of classic rock, blues, or indie rock and the crowd is as varied as you can get. Shaw's is also a "sports bar," so you can expect to watch the game on one of the 9 Big-Screen T.V.'s.

B.B.'s Lawnside BBQ in Kansas City, MO

  • B.B.’s Lawnside BBQ (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

B.B.'s Lawnside BBQ is owned by Lindsay and Jo Shannon, a husband and wife team, and they have been featuring live blues music, Thursday through Sunday since 1992. They also host several special events that are held each year, including the Sherwood Center Benefit, The Acoustic Blues Showcase, a benefit for the Kansas City Blues Society, as well as the Hope House benefit which helps abused women.

Lindsay’s credentials are impressive: he is the founding member of the Kansas City Blues Society, a blues radio DJ, and a booking agent for the blues stage at Kansas City’s Spirit Festival. Lindsay’s successful radio show on KCFX, 101FM, The Fox,  “The Kansas City Blues Show,” earned him the Blues Foundation’s coveted “Keeping the Blues Alive” award for blues in commercial radio in 1992.

When he was a boy, the Kansas City Blues, a farm team of the New York Yankees, played ball at a stadium close to all the barbecue places in the 18th and Vine district, and eating barbecue became part of the ritual. In the ’50s and early ’60s the opportunity to hear blues and jazz music came from AM radio stations including KPRS in Kansas City, and a Little Rock, Arkansas radio station that featured all the blues greats of the time. When Lindsay was in college he got his own smoking pit and began to develop barbecue recipes while listening to the blues.

When you come to Kansas City, be sure to stop by this friendly, family place. It’s easy to get there. As Lindsay says, “To find it, turn right on 85th, then go south about 60 years.”
